Religious Cults on Show in Havana’s Obrapia Street

HAVANA TIMES – The Casa de Africa’s museum, on Obrapia Street, opened its doors again in May for Africa Day.
Casa de Africa worked in collaboration with museums in Regla and Guanabacoa to inaugurate the exhibition, and had the enthusiastic assistance of the center’s curators, promoters and staff.
This exhibition’s central theme is popular cults in Africa and Cuba, cults with a long-standing tradition and validity in both peoples. Religious images, small allegorical sculptures, idols, ancient tools, crowned by a beautiful wall hanging, created by the unequalled painter Mendives, belonging to the museum’s own collection.
Plus, the book “El Monte”, by renowned author Lidia Cabrera, is also up for sale. This exhibition will be open to the public throughout the month of June, Monday-Saturday, 9 AM- 6PM. Obrapia Street is one of main streets in Old Havana and the Casa de Africa museum is popular for both its exhibitions as well as its regular music concerts.

I had lots of fun at Grandma Alicia apartment located in Obrapia and Aguacate as a young boy. I remember ‘ la bodega ‘ in a nearby street corner ‘,Los pastelitos ,’ and ‘ la tienda de Los pollos .’ They sacrificed the chickens right on the spot. Talk about fresh chicken meat.
