HAVANA TIMES – Russia on Wednesday accused the United States of trying to forcibly overthrow Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whom Moscow supports.

“We will continue to resist attempts to stage a coup in Venezuela that have been a failure so far,” Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters.

Russia expects such coup attempts to “continue at the US behest,” Ryabkov said in comments carried by state news agency TASS.

Russia has sent military advisers to Venezuela.

Washington has not excluded the possibility of a military intervention to oust Maduro, who won a second term in a disputed election a year ago and under whose rule the economy has edged towards collapse.

Opposition leader Juan Guaido, whom the US and dozens of other countries have recognized as Venezuela’s interim president, has repeatedly referred to an eventual military intervention recently.

Guaido also says he has won over part of the army, more than 1,000 of whose members have defected to Colombia and Brazil.

Maduro on Tuesday ordered the army to purge “traitors” from its ranks.

If such a person is discovered, “it is an order: capture him immediately,” Maduro told thousands of soldiers at a military event in the northern state of Carabobo.

  • Look for the direction that the refugees are moving: that will tell you which are the countries with the better political systems. Are South Koreans fleeing to the North?

  • Firstly Kevin, Cuba does not pursue socialism, it practices communism. I invite you to look at the article upon the results of the elections in the European Union. You may note that the communist party does not even appear – 28 countries and not a single communist elected!
Why Kevin according to you, do I “have no clue”? Does the recording of fact offend your nostrils? Trotting out the tired old socialist line about being for the people, no longer works in democracy. Some of the people in Europe have experienced “suck it and see communism” and having sucked it, spit it out!
The people of Cuba for sixty dreary years have been denied the opportunity of choice. That Kevin is because the Castro regime and communism can only remain in place by repression and denial. They dare not hold open free elections, being driven by latent fear.

  • Clearly you have no clue!! Socialism is for the people by the people!! We the people will prevail.

  • Russia is devoted to dictatorship it’s few friends it has are all authoritarian regimes.
And it doesn’t like western democracies clearly.
Pointless to listen to anything political it says it’s with tyranny and oppression.

  • Clearly Kevin you have little if any experience of the communist constrictor. Pause for a moment and take a look at the history of communism, its repression thirst for control and declared purpose of world domination. Certainly, every political system has its faults, but at the end, one has to choose whether to accept total control by a political system that has never been elected in open competition or one where you have the opportunity to choose alternatives. The cost of communism was experienced in Eastern Europe for a generation and when given the opportunity, the people of all those countries rejected it. The people of Cuba have not had such opportunity for over sixty years.

  • The Imperial snake changes all the time!! It gets bigger and more evil every day as it tries to suffocate everything in its path!!! If you are different it just tries to destroy you!! If it cant control you it just decides to kill you! If it cant rape you it tries to strangle you!! We know all about the Imperial snake and its lust for more and more power!! World domination is the only thing that the Imperial Snake wants!! Greed and more greed!! We must stop them at all cost!! The buck stops here buckos!!

  • How nice and cosy, the Russian military advisers will be able to renew acquaintances with the Cuban military advisers. One can even smell Nikolai S. Leonov sitting in the Duma and giving advice to his former subordinate in the KGB Colonel Vladamir Putin. The Russian bear never changes.

  • The people of Venezuela want Maduro out.
