Cuba Embargo Outlasts Rep. Diaz-Balart

HAVANA TIMES, Feb. 11 — The US economic blockade on Cuba has lasted about a half century and one of its biggest supporters, Miami Rep. Lincoln Diaz-Balart, threw in the towel on Thursday, saying he would not seek a tenth two-year term in office.
The 55-year-old Cuban-born Balart says he will return to practicing law.
The congressman’s younger brother Mario Diaz-Balart —born in the US— is also a US Representative from the Miami area.
The twosome, along with Cuban-born Florida Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, have led the charge in the House to support all actions aimed at overthrowing the Cuban government of Fidel and now Raul Castro.
They steadfastly oppose lifting the travel ban that prohibits ordinary US citizens from visiting Cuba and fully support the continued blockade that stymies the island’s economy.
