Cuba Opens Round-2 with 6-3 Win

HAVANA TIMES, Oct. 28 — Cuba managed a hard fought 6-3 win over Holland in its first Round Two game of the Intercontinental Cup taking place in Taiwan.

Jose Dariel Abreu homered in the seventh to tie the score at 3-3 and later in the inning  Hector Olivera batted a two-run triple to give Cuba the go ahead runs.

Giorvis Duvergel also hit a solo homer for Cuba in the first inning and Alexei Bell had two triples (in the second and eighth innings) to help his team.

The runs scored by Holland were the first given up by Cuban pitching in five games of the tournament.

The winning pitcher was reliever Jonder Martinez who pitched a stellar 4.1 scoreless innings allowing only two hits. Cuba’s starter Freddy Asiel Álvarez allowed two runs in the third and one in the fifth before leaving the game.

Arschwin Asjes took the loss for Holland in relief of Tom Stuifbergen.

Also on Thursday, Italy defeated South Korea 5-2.

Cuba’s next game is against Japan on Friday.
