Tourism Relocates Work Force
HAVANA TIMES, Aug. 24 – Some 9,000 tourism workers, a tenth of that sector’s employees in Cuba, were relocated in other types of work because of the low season and the effect of the international financial crisis, reported IPS.
The island’s authorities reported a slight growth in tourist arrivals in the first half of the year, but nonetheless saw a drop in revenues as spending per person declined.
Hey! We did our part and spent a modest sum in Havana Vieja, Las Terrazas, Pinar del Rio, and parts in between. Upon returning to the US we faced the threat of $15,000 fines, a threat that was not carried out, I am glad to say. The authorities asked what kind of example I was setting for my 20-year-old daughter ( who came with me). I thought, but didn’t say, ” A very good one! The ban on travel to Cuba is ridiculous.” One of the immigration officials questioning us said he could not wait to go to Cuba!
