Cuban National Ballet Special

Photos by Caridad

HAVANA TIMES, February 7 – The occasion was the 50th anniversary of a performance back in February 1959 when the Alicia Alonso Ballet Company, forerunner of the Cuban National Ballet, danced to welcome the new government and Rebel Army, fresh from toppling the Batista dictatorship. The venue was the same 5,000-seat Karl Marx Theater, known as the Teatro Blanquita before the Revolution.

  • Wonderful photos. I saw the company twice in London in Giselle and Don Quioxte.they were both amazing performances.Don Q was made even more special at the end when Alicia Alonso came on stage during the curtain calls.

  • Wow. When I was last in Havana in 2007 I went to see Coppelia (the ballet, not the ice cream park… although I did wait in line many times at the other Coppelia for ice cream). It was a beautiful ballet. Gosh, I wish I could have seen these performances.

  • Bravo, Caridad! Muy buenas fotos.
