Have Holguin Beaches Been Affected by BP Oil?

Question: We are travelling to a resort near Holguin and wanted to know if the beaches have been affected by the BP oil spill since Hurricane Paula has passed thru Cuba or if any of the beaches are closed.

Answer: One of the most popular beach areas near the city of Holguin is Guardalavaca. Located along the northern coast and consisting of a series of neighbouring beaches with green tropical vegetation, stone-white sand and turquoise seas protected by coral reefs, this region is considered one of the finest resort areas in the eastern half of the island.

In an October 2010, post-Tropical Storm phone consultation with several of the resorts at Guardalavaca, they report that there has been no impact on the beaches from the BP oil spill, nor are any beaches closed.
