How can I get information on ophthalmology care in Cuba for foreigners?
Question: I am interested to travel to Cuba for a consultation with an ophthalmologist. Who should I contact? What might a consultation, hospital stay and operation cost, if necessary?
Answer: One of the finest ophthalmological hospitals in Cuba is the Instituto Cubano de Oftalmología Ramon Pando Ferrer (Cuban Institute of Ophthalmology), located in Havana. In addition to being both a national and international reference hospital, it is also a leading teaching center.
Medical care at Pando Ferrer, as the Hospital is locally known, includes diagnosis, treatment and surgical solutions, as well as emergency services, ambulatory care and hospitalization if needed. Pando Ferrer is also equipped with state-of-the-art technology for the diagnosis of various eye diseases and innovative surgical techniques. Medical services include corneal refractive surgery, cataract, glaucoma, cornea, low vision, oculoplasty, pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus, retina, neuro-ophthalmology and other ophthalmic subspecialties.
Pando Ferrer has a program that comes under Health Tourism, which since 1991 has been providing medical care to patients from other countries. I am visiting Cuba with MEDICCGLOBAL in February and would like to know if it would be possible to have a cataract removed. I had one removed in my right eye in South Africa with a lens but my left eye cannot be corrected for 20/20 vision or even close.
We have a fairly full schedule so not sure I will be able to fit it in…and donot want to be disruptive to the group.
The experience in CApe Town was quick and without anesthesia or tranquilizer at my request. The MD decided to do my more correctable eye which is splendid but I now find myself closing my left eye when I wear my glasses not when I wear my contact.
Why am I not doing it in the USA is entirely because of cost and I donot carry Medicare B which would cover some of the cost and it was more than half the cost in Cape Town. We do have an access to care which will be helped by Obamacare. Thank you for your attention and I look forward to visiting after my first trip 20years ago.Jacqueline Barnes
