HAVANA TIMES — The Cuban baseball team that will play a series of five exhibition games with a USA university selection was announced on Monday by manager Alfonso Urquiola. The games will be played in Matanzas on July 23-24 and in Pinar del Rio on the July 25,26,27, reports Baseballdecuba.com.
Urquiola told the press that in deciding on the roster he took into account the preparation of each athlete as well as their age, willingness and real possibility to contribute to the team for this traditionally difficult series.
A total of 12 Cuban provinces are represented on the 27-member team with the most coming from Pinar del Rio (6) and Matanzas (5).
Before the game time on Wednesday, it is possible that three players be dropped from the team, depending on the final agreement with the USA counterparts.
Catchers: Frank Camilo Morejon (Industriales), Lorenzo Quintana (Pinar del Río) and Luis Abel Castro (Isla de la Juventud).
Infielders: Ramón Lunar (Villa Clara), José Miguel Fernández (Matanzas), Luis O. Yander (Santiago de Cuba), Yordan Manduley (Holguín), Luis Alberto Valdés (Pinar del Río), Raúl González (Ciego de Avila ), Lourdes Y. Gourriel (Industriales), David Castillo (Pinar del Río) and Yasiel Santoya (Matanzas).
Outfielders: Yadiel Hernandez (Matanzas), Guillermo Heredia (Matanzas), Roel Santos (Granma), Osniel Madera (Pinar del Río) and Guillermo Avilés (Granma).
Pitchers: Norge Luis Ruiz (Camagüey), Julio Alfredo Martínez (Pinar del Río), Yoanni Yera (Matanzas), Vladimir Gutierrez (Pinar del Río), Yaisel Sierra (Holguín), Yusmel Velázquez (Holguín), Pedro Duran (Industriales) Yunieski García (Artemisa), Juan Carlos Viera (Las Tunas) and Alain Tamayo (Granma).
