Alert for Rains in Central Provinces

HAVANA TIMES — Although its center is now far to the north, Hurricane Sandy continues to affect Cuba with heavy rains in the central and western parts of the country.

With the treat of serious flooding, the civil defense authorities have declared an Alert Phase for the provinces of Cienfuegos, Villa Clara, Sancti Spíritus and Ciego de Ávila.

The notice issued on Friday afternoon states that the weather conditions will last at least 24 hours with heavy showers especially in Villa Clara and Ciego de Avila.

Some coastal flooding is predicted in low lying zones of the western and central regions of the country including the Gulf of Guacanayabo.
