HAVANA TIMES — As part of an effort to strengthen regional customs enforcement, the Argentina customs agency has donated to Cuba a detection dog trained in fighting drug trafficking and smuggling, reported the ANSA news service.
At the Buenos Aires held second edition of the “Best Practices with Dogs Awards,” the governments of Cuba and Ecuador wound up winners. The event was also attended by customs representatives from Chile, Mexico, Panama and Peru.
The two winners will each receive the donation of a trained detection dog — either a Labrador or a Golden Retriever — which has been health certified by a specialized clinic.
The deputy chief of the General Customs of Cuba, William Perez Gonzalez, recalled that the government of the island has been using trained dogs for border control for over 30 years.
