Candidate Nominations Begin in Cuba

HAVANA TIMES — From today until September 29, nominations of candidates for delegates to the Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power will be made in the neighborhoods across the island, reported the Prensa Latina news agency.

Some 51,000 neighborhood meetings will occur to nominate at least two people in each district, with the final delegate selections to be made on October 21.

The National Electoral Commission envisions that close to 8.5 million people are eligible to vote in the upcoming general elections that take place every five years.

While the local neighborhood elections are contested among candidates who are not allowed to campaign, the elections for the Provincial Assembly and members of the National Assembly (parliament) are carried out by a slate vote with one candidate for each position.
