Cuba Baseball Player Offered $40 Million

HAVANA TIMES, Feb 13 — Cuban baseball player Yoennis Cespedes last week received an offer for close to $40 million to play for the Florida Marlins, reported that city’s Café Fuerte website.

A source close to negotiations said the offer was for a six year contract and that the Cuban athlete has no immediate plans to meet with other Major League teams.

After a two-day visit to Miami to meet with executives of the Marlins, Cespedes returned last Thursday to the Dominican Republic, where he has had permanent residence since last month.

NOTE: Later on Monday it is being widely reported that Cespedes has signed an agreement for $36 million over four years, with the Oakland Athletics.
