Cuba Baseball Season Begins

Once again slugger Frederich Cepeda leads Sancti Spiritus.

HAVANA TIMES, Nov 28 — The 2011-2012 Cuban baseball season got underway on Sunday with the inaugural game between last year’s champs, Pinar del Rio and runner-up Ciego de Avila.

The game was won by Ciego 8-4 playing in Pinar del Rio.

With no games on Monday, a full schedule of eight games is on tap for Tuesday.

Two teams – Mayabeque (vs. Matanzas) and Artemisa (vs. Cienfuegos) – have their Cuban league debuts, due to the administrative/political division of the rural Havana province and the eliminiation of that former team.

In the other games, Sancti Spiritus plays in Pinar del Rio; Isla de la Juventud hosts Industriales; Guantanamo plays in Villa Clara; Santiago de Cuba in Ciego de Avila and Las Tunas travels to Holguin.
