Cuba Cancels at Hungary Boxing Tourney

HAVANA TIMES, Feb 8 — The Cuban boxing team will not be participating in the Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Hungary due to winter storms that have hit Europe and a strike at the Paris airport, official sources confirmed yesterday with the Prensa Latina news agency.

The contests taking place this weekend in the Hungarian city of Debrecen were to have been attended by nine Cuban boxers as part of the first segment of their Olympic preparation in international competitions.

“We are in contact with organizers of other tournaments so as to make a decision that will allow us to satisfy our goal by adding fights with other opponents at that same level,” said Cuba’s national boxing commissioner to reporters.

The Bocskai Memorial Tournament is expected to attract 140 boxers from 22 countries, including Russia, Uzbekistan and China.
