Cuba Plays Taiwan in Baseball Finals

HAVANA TIMES, July 17 — In what has become this summer’s top amateur baseball rivalry, Cuba and Taiwan square off Sunday in the finals of the World Baseball Challenge tournament taking place in Prince George, Canada.

To reach the finals Cuba defeated the Toshiba team of Japan 8-1 on Saturday.  Taiwan had already earned its ticket to the finals with a 10-6 extra-inning win Friday over Cuba, breaking its undefeated status.

Youlieski Gourriel and Hector Olivera (4 RBIs) both homered twice in the victory over Japan.  Vicyohandri Odelin picked up the win allowing six hits in eight innings.

The finals match takes on added spice after Taiwan defeated the Cuba B-Team earlier in the month in the finals of the World Port Tournament in Rotterdam.

Live Stream of the final game at 3:00 p.m. in British Colombia – 6:00 p.m. in Havana, Cuba.
