Cuba Rejects Statements by EU Diplomat

HAVANA TIMES, Feb 7 — The Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs today rejected recent statements by Catherine Ashton, the head of diplomacy for the European Union, concerning the reintroduction of temporary arrests of peaceful demonstrators in Cuba.

The official statement asserts that Ms. Ashton is interfering in matters that concern only Cubans and it reiterated that Havana does not recognize any political or moral authority on the part of the EU to criticize the island on matters of relating to human rights.

Meanwhile, the senior representative of the European Union considered that the Cuban government needs to move towards the “full respect for the civil and political rights of the population,” she said in an interview published Saturday in Brazil.
