Cuba Upset in Opener at Rotterdam

HAVANA TIMES, June 24 — Cuba opened its play in the Rotterdam World Port Baseball Tournament on Friday with a surprise loss 6-4 to Curacao.

“Sloppy fielding (four errors) and a less-than-effective starting outing by Dalier Hinojosa sent Cuba reeling to a surprising opening-game defeat at the hands of pesky Curacao,” reported www.baseballdecuba.com.

Ismel Jimenez took the loss for Cuba in relief while Gregory Justina was the winning pitcher for Curacao, which played as the home team.

Alexander Guerrero drove in two runs with a single in Cuba’s three run rally in the fifth inning.

In all, Curacao had 11 hits to Cuba’s nine and also committed three errors.
