Cuba Wins VB Match vs. Thailand 3-0

HAVANA TIMES, Nov. 2 — Cuba managed a tough fought straight set victory over Thailand (25-19, 29-27, 27-25) on Tuesday in the Women’s World Volleyball Championships being played in Japan.

With the win the Cubans are now 2-2 and face group leader USA in their final first round match on Wednesday.

Cuba was led by Yoana Palacio, 19 points, and Kenia Carcases who had 17.  Rachel Sanches also had 11 points.  Thailand’s Pleumjit Thinkaow led her team with 12 points.

Also on Tuesday the USA and Germany won in straight sets over Kazakhstan and Croatia respectively.

Four teams in Pool C will advance to the second round of the tournament.  The USA (4-0) and Germany (3-1) have already assured their tickets to move on.  The third and fourth slots are between Thailand and Cuba (2-2) and Croatia (1-3) while Kazakhstan (0-4) is already eliminated.

In their final matches on Wednesday, Thailand plays Germany and Croatia faces Kazakhstan.
