Cuban Union Leader Assures Big Turn Out in Upcoming Election

HAVANA TIMES — The general secretary of the Workers’ Central Union of Cuba (CTC), Salvador Valdes, speaking on national television on Friday, predicted mass participation by the members of that organization in the upcoming general elections.

The top official of the only union allowed in Cuba said he was sure of a high turnout of workers in the electoral process, which will begin on Monday (September 3) with neighborhood meetings to nominate candidates to the Municipal Assemblies of People’s Power.

“Support for the transformations underway and for our socialist society has to be shown through the turnout and the selection of candidates in the nomination meetings,” he said.

Presently, 25 percent of the seats in parliament are occupied by Cuban workers who are directly linked to production and services.
