Cuba’s Henry Urrutia on the Orioles

HAVANA TIMES — While he didn’t get one of those multi-million dollar contracts, Las Tunas outfielder Henry Urrutia has landed a $778,500 signing bonus with the Baltimore Orioles.

Urrutia, 25, the cousin of six-time Cuban batting title holder Osmani Urrutia, had a big year in his last in the Cuban League two seasons back hitting .397. He posted a .346 lifetime average over five seasons play.

Several Cuban players have landed big contracts in recent years including Yasiel Puig, 21, who just signed for $42 million with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Others with multi-million dollar contracts include Yoennis Cespedes (Oakland A’s), Aroldis Chapman (Cincinnati Reds), Dayan Viciedo and Alexei Ramirez (Chicago White Sox), Kendry Morales (Anaheim Angles), Yuniesky Maya (Washington), Liván Hernandez (Milwaukee) Yunel Escobar (Toronto Blue Jays), Jose Contreras (Philadelphia), etc.
