Deserting Cuban Baseball Player Identified

HAVANA TIMES — The Edmonton Journal reported on Sunday that the player from the Cuban female baseball team who had “disappeared” last Monday in Edmonton, Canada, has been identified as Odrisleisis Pequero del Sol.

The 21-year-old resident of Ciego de Avila Province played in only one game of the World Cup baseball tournament before crossing the border into the US. From there she contacted the Cuban delegation to let them know that she was safe.

For its part, the Cuban team performed dismally in the competition, losing to Australia (4-12), Japan (3-6), Venezuela (5-11), the United States (1-9) and Canada (2-12). The Caribbean team was able to avoid finishing up in last place, however, by beating Holland (13-5).
