First Festival of Marine Turtles in Cuba

HAVANA TIMES, March 27 — Cuba has begun organizing its first festival dedicated to the protection of sea turtles. The event will be held in mid-May in the La Coloma fishing community in the western province of Pinar del Rio.

According to Prensa Latina, the festival aims to contribute to the preservation of these reptiles in the keys of St. Philip, south of the archipelago, which is a preferred nesting site for a particular species of Cuban turtles.

This unique festivity, to be held near turtle nesting sites, is sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund and other associated organizations.

For decades, Cuba has undertaken serious programs for environmental protection and education about such endangered species.
