HAVANA TIMES, Aug. 17 – The Cuban Meteorology Institute reported at 6:00 p.m. on Monday that Hurricane Bill threatens to become a major hurricane in the next 12-24 hours.
The storm is in the Atlantic and situated 950 miles east of St. Lucia and 850 miles east of Barbados in the eastern Caribbean. Bill’s maximum sustained winds were clocked at just over 90 MPH.
The storm is expected to continue on a west-northwest path headed for Bermuda and possibly the US northeast coast.
The first tropical cyclone of the current hurricane season (June-November) is not expected to affect Cuba unless it took a highly unexpected turn to the south in the coming days.
Cuba was pelted by three major hurricanes in 2008 and is still busy at work rebuilding the over four hundred thousand damaged or destroyed homes.
