HAVANA TIMES — Cuba has recorded an increase in air pollutants over the past two years, including episodes of acid rain, revealed investigative reporters with the island’s official Granma newspaper on Monday.
Several stations belonging to the national surveillance network reported increased concentrations of sulfate and nitrate emissions from local industries using sulfur dioxide and nitrogen, which have deteriorated air quality.
Rosemary Lopez, from the Pollution and Atmospheric Chemistry Center, said this situation led to the occurrence of acid rain in eastern provinces, while air masses from industrial areas in the northeastern US also impact on the island.
The Alhucema Solidarity Initiatives Association based in Seville, Spain also sends medical supplies to Cuba.
