Playa Giron Boxing Tourney Ends

HAVANA TIMES – The Playa Girón national boxing tournament concluded this weekend in Sancti Spiritus province, with the Camagüey team on top (3-0-3), Granma newspaper reported.

Also excelling were Pinar del Rio (2-1-2), the host Sancti Spiritus (2-0-1) and Guantánamo (1-3-4), while Santiago de Cuba, which had four finalists, was left without gold.

The Cienfuegos fighter Robeisy Ramirez was among the foremost competitors, because with just 19 years he won the 56 kg against the current world champion Lazaro Alvarez Pinar del Rio, just months after being proclaimed Olympic champion in the 52 kg category.

Also taking home gold were: Veitía Yosbany Spiritus (49 kg) and Dariesky Palmero (52), Iván Oñate (60), Yasnier Toledo (64), Roniel Iglesias (69), Yasiel Despein (75), Julio Cesar La Cruz (81) and Leinier Peró (91), and the super heavyweight Yoandry Toirac.
