HAVANA TIMES, July 15 – Spanish priest Mariano Arroyo was found dead Monday in the Nuestra Señora de Regla parish church in the Cuban capital, the archbishop of Havana announced.
Although the case is still under investigation, the first reports indicate that the priest was murdered, reported IPS. If corroborated, Arroyo would be the second Catholic priest killed this year.
On Wednesday, the Spanish daily El Pais quoted Arroyo’s sacristan Orlando Arocha as saying the priest had suffered torture. The paper is known for its anti-Cuba slant and confirmation of the accusation is still forthcoming as investigations continue.
