HAVANA TIMES — The Prensa Latina news agency reported a perceptible earthquake of 2.4 on the Richter scale as having occurred on Wednesday in the town of Caibarien, in the center of the island, though there were no reports of human injuries or material damage.
According to the National Seismological Service, the quake occurred at 9:22 a.m. local time, at a depth of 10 km and was located at coordinates 22.46 latitude and 79.26 longitude.
This type of event is rare in the central and western parts of the island, as they occur mainly in eastern Cuba.
Each year the Caribbean nation records between 50 and 100 moderate-to-low-intensity earthquakes.
