HAVANA TIMES — US first lady, Michelle Obama, will speak on Monday with young Cuban students in Havana, where she arrived today accompanying her husband, president Barack Obama for their three day visit to Cuba. This is the first visit by a US president to the island in 88 years.
Also traveling with the presidential couple are daughters Sasha and Malia and Marian Robinson, the mother of the first lady.
The meeting of Michelle Obama with Cuban adolescent students will take place at the Cuban Art Factory, a popular space for leisure and culture in Havana, and coincides with the first anniversary of the “Let Girls Learn” initiative. Also participating will be some Cuban young people who have studied in the United States.
The first lady will speak to them on the importance of education for girls. She will ask them some questions from US students about what life is like in Cuba and exchanges that can be made between the two countries, advanced the White House.
The president and first lady launched in March 2015 the “Let Girls Learn” initiative with the aim of providing access to education to 62 million female children and adolescents worldwide who do not attend school due to financial, physical and cultural barriers to accessing education.
The first lady will also participate on Monday evening at the state dinner offered by Raul Castro at the Palace of the Revolution, the Cuban government headquarters.
On Tuesday Michelle Obama will participate in a ceremony of a gift to the people of Cuba at the Ruben Martinez public library.
