Speed Boat Emigration to U.S. Down

HAVANA TIMES, Aug. 28 – The number of persons who arrived in the United States from Cuba through the Florida Strait fell by around 75 per cent since October 2008, reported the U.S. Coast Guard and Customs Service, reported IPS.

The Coast Guard’s interceptions also decreased from a monthly average of 183 during the previous fiscal year to 72 in the current one.

It is estimated that some of the causes for the decrease could be the effects of the economic crisis on the Cuban-American community, the strengthening of the measures against the trafficking in emigrants and the easing of the travel regulations by the Barack Obama administration.
