HAVANA TIMES, Sept. 23 — A tropical depression, the fifteenth of the season, developed on Thursday morning south of Jamaica and north of Colombia in the central Caribbean, notes Cuba’s Meteorological Institute (INSMET).
The weather system will most likely become a tropical storm and get a name by later Thursday or early Friday, states INSMET.
The National Hurricane Center in Miami predicts that the storm will hit land or skirt the coast of northeastern Nicaragua or eastern Honduras as a Tropical Storm on late Friday or early Saturday and then intensify to hurricane strength over water before moving west for a landing in Belize or the Mexican Yucatan.
The tropical depression currently packs winds of 55 kph (30 mph) with stronger gusts. It is moving west at a speed of 24 kph (15 mph), notes the Cuban weather forecasters.
