Women Near Half of Work Force

Women make up nearly half the work force but domestic inequality can made it hard to take on important decision-making positions.

HAVANA TIMES, August 13 – Women represent 46 per cent of the labor force in the large civilian state sector, said Yolanda Ferrer, secretary general of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC).  Nonetheless, the leader also recognized that “women are still burdened by the endless workday at home.”

Like many countries, efforts for fairly sharing domestic responsibilities are still a long ways from being general practice in Cuba, often hampering women’s ability to take on top positions -to which they are often the most qualified- because of time limitations.
