Cuba Set for Colombia Baseball Event

Ramon Lunar is one of the infielders heading for the tournament in Colombia.

HAVANA TIMES — Cuba is sending a team with many young prospects and some veterans to the Simon Bolivar Tournament to take place in Cartagena, Colombia from August 6-8. The team will be managed by the controversial Victor Mesa.

The rather short round-robin event without playoffs includes teams from the Dominican Republic, Panama and host Colombia. The team with the most wins in their three games wins the title.

The following is the team Cuba is sending to the tournament. Listed alongside their names is the team they play with in the Cuban League.

Catchers: Frank Camilo Morejón (Industriales) and Lorenzo Quintana (Pinar del Río).

Infielders: Ramón Lunar (Villa Clara), William Saavedra (Pinar del Río), José Miguel Fernández (Matanzas), Luis Yander la O. (Santiago de Cuba), Alexander Ayala (Camagüey), Andy Sarduy (Villa Clara), Raúl González (Ciego de Avila), Angel Miguel Fernández (Isla de la Juventud) and Michel Enríquez (Isla de la Juventud).

Outfielders: Yadiel Hernández (Matanzas), Víctor Víctor Mesa (Matanzas), Roel Santos (Granma) and Maikel Cáceres (Holguín).

Pitchers: Norge Luis Ruíz (Camagüey), Yoanni Yera (Matanzas), Vladimir Gutiérrez (Pinar del Río), José A. García (Artemisa) and Yosvany Torres (Pinar del Río).
