Cuba Wants Guest Status at Caribbean Baseball Series

HAVANA TIMES — Cuban Baseball Federation president Higinio Velez has asked the organizers of the Caribbean Baseball Series to allow the participation of the island in the upcoming series to be held in the Mexican city of Hermosillo in February 2013, “but only if we go as a guest team.”

From what was learned on Tuesday, economic reasons — especially the registration fee — are limiting the participation of the island in that tournament on a permanent basis.

For Cuba “it’s unlikely that we can assume the expense of more than a million dollars needed to organize the event and register with the organizing agency,” said Velez, who is still awaiting a response to his request.
