HAVANA TIMES, Jan 3 — Cuban chess master Leinier Dominguez set the Latin America record in 2011 by increasing his ELO points (the scale used to measure chess players’ abilities) by 18 points, reported the Agencia Cubana de Informacion.
Based on global rankings updated since last January by the International Chess Federation, it was learned that Dominguez reached a total of 2,730 points, which were enough to move him from the 32nd to the 21st place in worldwide rankings.
This past year, the top 10 Cuban players recorded an average of 2,595 points and advanced to 17th position on the boards headed by Russia, Ukraine and France.
