HAVANA TIMES — The peace agreement between the Colombian government and the FARC guerrillas appears to have suffered a major setback on Sunday in the nationwide referendum to ratify or reject the accord.

With 99.64% of the polling stations reporting the NO vote leads with 50.23% to 49.76% for the YES.

Voter abstention was considerably higher than expected with 63% of the potential voters deciding to stay home and only 37% participating.

The peace agreement reached in Cuba at the end of August and formally signed on Sept. 26 in Cartagena, Colombia was subject to ratification by the population.  With the NO vote winning the situation turns highly uncertain.
