HAVANA TIMES — A canvas by Cuban painter Wifredo Lam was sold on Wednesday for $4.56 million at the traditional Latin American Art Auction at Sotheby’s in New York, reported Café Fuerte.
The painting, “Idolo,” which was created from oil paint and charcoal, is dedicated to the Afro-Cuban deity Oya and was painted by Lam in 1944 following a trip to Haiti.
The work was bought by a South American collector whose identity was not disclosed.
Lam’s piece fetched the highest selling price for the day and set a record for a work by the famous Cuban artist. Previously, the highest price paid for one of his creations was $ 2.1 million, a record set in 2006.
