Campaign Against Homophobia in Cuba

HAVANA TIMES — The fifth annual “Cuban Day Against Homophobia” began on Tuesday with a press conference at the offices of Havana’s National Center for Sex Education (CENSEX), which is directed by Mariela Castro, the daughter of the country’s president.

The CENSEX director explained that this year’s event is taking place within a context of a higher level of scientific and educational understanding of the problem. She also highlighted the growing number of activists in the social networking community who are involved in sexual rights and health care.

The program this year will cover all provinces and will involve cultural, educational and academic institutions. The activities will also include the traditional and colorful street parade along the centrally located “La Rampa” (23rd Street) in Havana.

According to AFP, during her address, the sexologist announced a new “batch” of male-to-female sex-change operations planned for this year.
