HAVANA TIMES — The Canadian Public Health Department issued a warning on Thursday following the outbreak of cholera in Cuba. That office is recommending precautions for travelers visiting the island, reports the Café Fuerte website.
The health agency recommends that Canadians consult their physicians before traveling, take precautions with food and water consumption, and consider getting vaccinations should they plan to visit high risk areas.
The official death toll from the cholera outbreak currently remains at three, though independent sources are reporting higher figures.
In January of this year, Canada declared an alert after 60 tourists returned from Holguin with severe symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting caused by norovirus.
Over a million Canadians visited Cuba in 2011. It is the leading source of tourism to the island.
