HAVANA TIMES — Nearly 40 homes were damaged by a tornado in a population of a few thousand inhabitants in the province of Sancti Spiritus in central Cuba, reported DPA news.

The weather phenomenon swept through the town of Potrerillo on the afternoon of Wednesday, destroying 39 homes, two of them completely. The authorities reported no casualties.
Meanwhile, the Caribbean hurricane season begins on June 1st and lasts until November 30th. The Cuban Institute of Meteorology forecasts formation of 17 cyclones in the region, of which nine could reach hurricane status.
Last year Cuba suffered the brunt of two hurricanes. “Isaac” crossed the eastern part of the island in late August. Two months later, “Sandy” punished the same area, especially the provinces of Holguin and Santiago de Cuba.
Cuban authorities reported the death of 11 persons in the wake of “Sandy”, one of the most devastating hurricanes in recent years in the region. Sandy also resulted in the deaths of nearly 150 people only in the eastern United States.
Moreover, at least 24 people were killed Monday after a tornado in the state of Oklahoma, in the south-central United States.
