Cuba’s July 26th in Ciego de Avila Nears

HAVANA TIMES, July 18 — The most important date on the Cuban political calendar is July 26, which commemorates the guerilla attacks on two Batista garrisons back in 1953, which sparked the 1959 Cuban revolution.

Each year a fraternal competition takes place to select which province will host the celebration where the president usually gives an important keynote speech.  This year Ciego de Avila, a central province, and second least populated in the nation, was the winner.

In getting ready for the national limelight the Máximo Gómez Plaza in Ciego de Avila is receiving a face lift with workers putting in extra hours, reported Granma newspaper on Monday.
