Cuba Almost Upsets Brazil in V-Ball

HAVANA TIMES, July 6 — The final round of play of the World Volleyball League kicked off on Wednesday and Cuba almost upset Brazil, the defending champs, but fell three sets to two.

Playing at their best, the Cubans managed to win the first two sets 25-18 and 25-21 before Brazil got on track to win the third set 25-16. The fourth set was a heartbreaker won by Brazil 30-28. The tie breaker was 15-12.

Wilfredo Leon led Cuba with 21 points followed by Fernando Hernández with 17 and Henry Bell (16). Brazil was led by Lucas who scored 20 points.

In the other game in group F where Cuba is playing, Russia defeated the USA 3-1 ((29-31, 25-16, 25-21 y 25-22).  In group E, Argentina won a big victory over Italy 3-1 and host Poland defeated the tough Bulgaria 3-2.

Cuba squares off against Russia on Thursday with Brazil playing the United States in Group F.
In Group E, Bulgaria faces Italy and Argentina vs. Poland.
