Cuba Scares USA but Loses in Gold Cup

The USA team picked up their third Gold Cup win.

HAVANA TIMES — Cuba gave the USA soccer team a surprise scare in their Gold Cup match on Saturday when Ariel Pedro Martinez scored the first goal at the 36-minute mark. The favorites only managed to tie at the end of the first half on a penalty by Landon Donovan.

The USA took command at minute 57 on a goal by Joe Corona.  Chris Wondolowski would go on to score two more goals to end the scoring at 4-1. The match took place in Sandy, Utah.

Donovan has 53 career goals including 15 in 30 Gold Cup appearances. Wondolowski has six goals in the three matches the USA has played in this year’s tournament.

Cuba lost 3-0 to Costa Rica in its first Gold Cup contest.
