HAVANA TIMES, Jan 26 — The Fourth International Montecristo Cup Golf Tournament will take place from April 19–21 at Cuba’s Varadero beach resort, announced the organizers yesterday at a news conference.

The competition, held annually since 2009, will take place on the grounds of the ??Varadero Golf Club, located 90 miles from the capital, where it will assemble amateur players from around the world to compete in two categories: male and female.

Despite opposition from environmental activists, the government is seeking to develop that sport as a part of the tourism industry on the island.

Last year, Cuba began the investment of some 1.5 billion USD on the construction of four golf courses and associated upscale housing developments, the first of sixteen such proposed complexes.
