HAVANA TIMES — A new initiative to reform the Cuban Adjustment Act was introduced Thursday by Republican Representative David Rivera during a hearing of the immigration subcommittee of the Commission on Judicial Affairs of the US House of Representatives.
“The fact that Cubans benefit from the Cuban Adjustment Act by alleging political persecution and then quickly travelling back to the country that is persecuting them is a clear and flagrant abuse of the rule of law,” said Rivera, a Cuban-American lawmaker from the state of Florida.
Meanwhile Zoe Lofgren, the ranking Democrat on the subcommittee, explained that permanent residency obtained through the Cuban Adjustment Act “isn’t limited to (political) refugees.”
The current legislation, in force since 1966, has served to expedite the migration process for Cuban nationals, though it is described as “murderous” by the Cuban government for promoting life-threatening illegal immigration into the northern country.
