HAVANA TIMES – First Vice President Miguel Diaz-Canel addressed the closing session on Sunday in Havana of the Ninth Congress of the Cuban Journalists Association (UPEC), where Antonio Molto was announced as its new president.
Diaz-Canel called on the Cuban media to develop “a strategy and ways to implement paths for transformation and improvement of the press”. At the same time, he announced that the Communist Party is developing a functional “structural adjustment proposal”, for the media, without giving any details.
In his more than an hour long speech, the Diaz-Canel said that “we must change the mentality, some concepts, review the arguments and interpret differently because we are in another era”.
“I believe in dialogue, I believe in controversy, and in all of these we can argue from a position of refinement, respect and understanding about the issues,” said Díaz-Canel. He noted that the Cuban media’s “loyalty” to the Revolution and its leaders has been its greatest contribution to Cuban history.
