HAVANA TIMES — Felix Baez, the Cuban doctor hospitalized in Geneva since early Friday with the Ebola virus he contracted in Sierra Leone, Africa, called his family with a message of peace and hope, reported dpa news.
“Do not worry, I’m fine. Everything will be fine,” Baez said Friday by telephone to his wife Vania Ferrer, who is also a doctor.
Baez spoke twice on Friday with his family in Havana including his 21-month-old son.
The wife told the official Juventud Rebelde newspaper that she sensed Baez “has been in a good mood with a very positive spirit, as they are sure that everything will be fine.”
The doctor, who was moved from Sierra Leone to Switzerland, is stable and has a clinical picture similar to a bad cold, with fever, chills, and gastrointestinal and respiratory ailments, said the authorities of the Geneva hospital where he is a patient.
The medical team treating him is comprised of nine nurses, three doctors as well as other staff from various disciplines dedicated to his case, said the Swiss hospital administrators.
So far the particular situation that caused the doctor to contract Ebola in Sierra Leone is unknown. He was part of the first brigade of 165 Cuban health professionals sent from the island in early October.
