Cuba’s Young Filmmakers Event April 3-8 in Havana

By Irina Echarry

HAVANA TIMES – “Los lobos de este”, the third feature film by Carlos Machado Quintela, will open the 17th edition of the ICAIC Young Filmmakers Event at 2 pm on Tuesday, April 3 at the Charles Chaplin Cinema in Havana.

Filmed completely in Japan, the public will closely follow this film by the director of “La Piscina”, and “La obra del siglo”. However, the official opening of the week long film event will be in that same space at 8.30 at night.

The young fillmakers event got a lot of publicity this year as one of the films proposed to be shown outside the competition was censored. The censorship, of course, was from the Cuban Film Industry Institute (ICAIC), which immediately issued a statement explaining their reasons.

The film in question is titled “I want to make a movie”, by Yimit Ramirez. The Organizing Committee of the Show expressed its disagreement with the ICAIC statement and with the cancellation of its Press Conference about the event.

In spite of the pitfalls, this year 29 works will come to moviegoers in their three categories: 14 in Fiction, 12 in Documentary and three in Animation. As well as the presentation of 18 materials that are outside of competition, but contain high thematic value and that will be exhibited in the Bonus section.

The topics to be discussed in the debates of the Moving Ideas section will be gender violence, new explorations in horror genres and comedies, and the confluences between documentary and fiction.

The mirada del otro project will present 10 films and a web series filmed in Cuba by young foreign filmmakers. A selection of works from the Short Film Festival of Clemont-Ferrand, France, will also be shown.

Do not miss the opportunity to appreciate on the big screen this diverse sample of the young Cuban audiovisual works.  For those visitors who have a good grasp on Spanish we highly recommend this festival from April 3-8. Click here to check out the programming of the films.
