D.R. Upsets USA, Faces Cuba in BB Finals

HAVANA TIMES, Oct. 12 — The Dominican Republic won a big 7-2 upset over the undefeated USA in the World Cup/Pan American Games baseball qualifying tournament on Tuesday night in Puerto Rico.  The stage is now set for the title match against Cuba on Wednesday.  The USA plays Venezuela in the afternoon for third place.

The game was a tough pitching duel through seven innings with the Dominicans holding a precarious 2-1 lead, before busting the game open in the final innings.  The D.R. defeated Cuba 9-6 in the quarterfinals, sounding the warning that they are no push over.

Cuba lost to the US 4-1 its last quarterfinal game on Monday and rebounded for a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Venezuela in their semifinals game on Tuesday afternoon.
