HAVANA TIMES, Feb 27 — Deputies of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left European Parliamentary Group in France demanded the elimination of the European Union’s (EU) “Common Position,” reported the Prensa Latina news agency.
The rejection by the lawmakers of the current policy, which since 1996 has required progress by Cuba on human rights and democracy before normalizing relations with the island, was outlined in a meeting with Mirtha Hormilla, who is Cuba’s ambassador to Belgium and the island’s representative to the EU.
The parliamentarians also spoke in favor of the US lifting its embargo against the island and demanded that Washington release five Cubans accused of spying and who continue to serve long prison sentences in that country.
The meeting was attended by members of the European parliament from Germany, Spain, Portugal, Greece and other countries.
